Desreta Jackson, Chats on CROWN Act, Natural Hair

Since California passed Senate Bill 188 known as the CROWN Act, becoming the first state to provide expanded discrimination protections for natural hair, other states have followed suit — New York, New Jersey, and now a proposed bill in Kentucky.

We have heard how many naturalistas feel inspired by the CROWN Act, but I wanted to get a professional view on the bill, as well as other matters when it comes to natural hair, from a hair care professional. Recently, I interviewed actress and hairstylist. Desreta Jackson, where she educated us about natural hair care, as well as chatted about her upcoming career endeavors.

Mrs. Jackson is known for her iconic role in the film The Color Purple as young Celie. Today she is a natural hair expert and the author of “The Black Hair Conspiracy”. She has extensive knowledge of the history of hair and the ways in which common myths and customs have been falsely ingrained in popular culture. As a thought-leader in the natural hair realm, she provides an insiders-view on this current topic with broad insights and well-versed responses.
